SEPA, SEPA Instant, Faster Payments or SWIFT: picking the right rail

Cost, speed, cut-off times — and when SWIFT is still the only option.

Every business transfer travels over a rail — a shared network with its own rules for currency, speed, limits and cost. Choosing the wrong one is rarely fatal, but it is the most common reason a payment arrives late or costs more than it should.

What a rail decides

The rail determines three things: which currencies it carries, how long settlement takes, and what information travels with the money. SEPA moves euros inside the SEPA zone; Faster Payments moves pounds inside the UK; SWIFT moves almost any currency almost anywhere, but through a chain of correspondent banks.

SEPA Credit Transfer

The default for euro payments between EU/EEA accounts. Typically settles the next business day, has no amount cap and carries a 140-character remittance line. Cut-off times depend on the sending institution.

SEPA Instant

Same zone, same currency, but settlement in under ten seconds, 24/7, including weekends. Transfers are capped at €100,000. Not every receiving bank accepts SEPA Instant yet, so a payment may be rerouted to classic SEPA.

Faster Payments (UK)

The UK's domestic rail for GBP: near-instant, around the clock, and used for everything from payroll to supplier invoices. You need a UK sort code and account number on both ends.

SWIFT

Use SWIFT when the counterparty is outside SEPA or needs a currency other than EUR/GBP. Expect one to three business days, intermediary fees that can be deducted along the way, and stricter documentation requests for larger amounts.

FAQ

Can I force a payment to go via SEPA Instant?

You can request it, but if the beneficiary bank does not support the scheme the payment is executed as a standard SEPA Credit Transfer.

Why did my SWIFT payment arrive short?

Intermediary banks may deduct their fees from the principal unless the payment was sent with charges set to "OUR".
